For one night only, No Nude Men will bring you another fabulously entertaining evening of short readings, featuring work by some of the city’s best and brightest writers, and performances by company regulars and new faces alike. An open wine bar, delicious appetizers and deserts, multiple chances to win some fabulous door prizes and more completes this potentially quite perfect evening, all yours for a mere $20.00! All proceeds go directly to supporting our 2009-2010 season, which is shaping up to be our most exciting ever with two world premieres (Better Homes and Ammo written and direct by Wylie Herman, and Giant Bones, directed and adapted by Stuart Bousel from the novel by Peter S. Beagle), our largest new play festival ever (featuring 12 new plays by 14 different writers), a new production of The Tempest right on the California coast, and a host of other great shows on the horizon!

SemWeb Installfest – October 18th, 2009 – 1pm

Learn more about the Semantic Web!semantic

The plan is to have a short presentation (basically, a sales pitch :) on each of several Open Source packages. Then, folks can download the packages they are interested in and try installing them. Once everyone has their packages of interest, we can have some breakout sessions for demos, experimentation, etc.

* “Semantic Web Programming” suite

“Semantic Web Programming” suggests Eclipse 3.4, Java SDK 1.6, Pellet 1.5.2, and Protege 4.0. I can also help folks install these tools on Mac OS X and possibly help on other systems.

I’ve created a HowTo page for installing these on Mac OS X: http://cfcl.com/twiki/bin/view/Projects/Semweb/Setup_SWP_OSX
If you can help us create a HowTo for another OS, speak up!

* Franz tools

We’ve had an offer from Franz Inc to help folks install Gruff (a graph browser) and AllegroGraph (an RDF store). If you are interested in learning about these tools, please let me know!

* Your favorite tool(s)

If you would like to present another tool and help folks get started using it, please let me know! Alternatively, feel free to suggest ideas on [masked].

Updated information about this event will be maintained here: http://cfcl.com/twiki/bin/view/Projects/Semweb/2009_10_18

Announcing AfricaCodeCamp SF – October 4th, 2009

The beauty of the barcamp format is that while it was originally born from a very hardcore geek background, it can be adapted to “camp” just about anything (BaconCamp anyone?). This has helped to popularize the unconference a great deal in recent years, which is fantastic for everyone. But through all of this, a group of us who met at the BarCamp Africa Silicon Valley last year have stayed in contact and met up at various other events. We talked about how having an event that returned to these geeky roots, which would be great, especially if it focused on Africa-related geeky stuff. (more…)

Arse Elektronika 2009 festival – SEX and TECHNOLOGY!

Arse ElektronikaSaturday, October 3rd from 11:30am – 9pm

pariSoma is excited to bring you Day 3 of the Arse Elektronika 2009 festival, featuring panels and discussions surrounding the interactivity between sex and technology.

The festival focuses on Sexuality, Genetics, Biotech, Wetware, and Body mods.

From conference organizer Johannes Grenzfurthner at monochrom:

“We will deal with sex, technology and the future. As bio-hacking, sexually enhanced bodies, genetic utopias and plethora of gender have long been the focus of literature, science fiction and, increasingly, pornography, this year will see us explore the possibilities that fictional and authentic bodies have to offer. Our world is already way more bizarre than our ancestors could have ever imagined. But it may not be bizarre enough. “Bizarre enough for what?” — you might ask. Bizarre enough to subvert the heterosexist matrix that is underlying our world and that we should hack and overcome for some quite pressing reasons within the next century. Don’t you think, replicants?”

Buy tickets here. Only $12.

SFDUG – San Francisco Drupal Users group – Sept 14

Drupal headerDrupalCon will be in San Francisco in April 2010!!

This is just great news for the Drupal Community, we start off this month with a presentation about how we really want to engage the local Drupal community and come together to help with the sponsorship / planning of this event.

This month we are going to look at Solr search and how its used to drive large content sites. Solr is a very powerful faceted search technology which integrates very well with Drupal.
First off we will have a Tech Session on Solr & Views Basics and then How to apply Solr & Views to a real site: the new MothersClick.

The technical session will be led by Scott Reynolds the maintainer of the Solr Views module which he has been working on. This module hooks Solr results into views. Scott will show us how this can be used on your web site.

For the Showcase site this month Theodore Serbinski Chief Technology Officer ParentsClick Network, a division of Lifetime Digital will do a case study of the new MotherClick web site, which is powered Drupal and Solr. This is a very high visibility site and we will learn why Solr was used and how the site was setup. He will also show off the way Solr Views is used in the site.

The session content is meant to really show is the power of Solr.

So please come on down and join us this is going to be a GREAT evening!!
