This will be a hands-on ontology modeling session with Dean Allemang. Dean will demonstrate the use of TopBraid Composer, an ontology editor from TopQuadrant.

Dean Allemang from TopQuadrant will give a tour of TopBraid Composer, our popular ontology engineering environment. The presentation will be focused on the Free Edition of TopBraid Composer, and its use for some common ontology engineering tasks, e.g., Reading RDFa, managing vocabularies in SKOS, querying data with SPARQL, and utilizing SPIN, a SPARQL-based inference mechanism.

Bio

Dean Allemang, Chief Scientist of TopQuadrant, has more than 15 years experience in research, deployment and development of knowledge-based systems. He is the co-author (with Jim Hendler) of “Semantic Web for the Working Ontologist: Effective Modeling in RDFS and OWL”.

Tech Atlas SF TV SHOW: Open Government 2.0!

In the ever increasing open source and open platform world, open government is quickly becoming a necessity. With massive amounts of data and information available, governments need help digesting to help set policy, become sustainable, provide efficient services, build community, and more.  Tech Atlas SF is happy to bring together forward thinking minds on how best to capitalize on the principal of Open Government 2.0.

For our second edition, we have the privilege of featuring Ron Vinson, deputy director of the San Francisco Department of Telecommunications and Information Systems for the City of San Francisco, and Eric Kansa, from UC Berkeley’s Information School. The show will be broadcast live on SF APPEAL.

Tech Atlas SF is a monthly live, one-hour online TV show. Passionate people discuss how globally relevant issues on the Internet are changing our lives.

The show is moderated and organized by Cyrus Farivar and is hosted by pariSoma Coworking Space.

That’s true. We’ve finalized our seed investment round. It took us a little more time than expected, but we’re very happy to join Betawork’s and Mark Cuban’s portfolios. Both of them have shown a genuine interest and vision in what appears to be the real-time web. We’re also pretty excited to announce that both Andrew Anker and David Recordon have joined our advisory board.

If you’re following, even remotely, the world of start-up or the one of basketball, you can’t ignore Mark Cuban’s name. Mark founded Broadcast.com a few years ago and sold it to Yahoo!. I am thrilled to have him on board. There aren’t many experienced entrepreneurs our there who have invested in start-ups like Mark did. He knows how to grow a business and we will learn a lot from him.

Betaworks is probably the most active investor in the real-time web. Their portfolio includes names like Twitter, Tumblr, Bit.ly, Tweetdeck, Twitterfeed as well as many others. They’ve proven quite successful at building a network of loosely joined pieces where all members interacts together. I am very excited to be on stage later today at Betaday to chat with Iain and Tony about the death of the web page.

We’re very happy and proud about this seed round, and I want to thank personally Mark, John, Andy, Tony, Andrew and David for their trust.

Last SFDUG of the year and we have a an awesome lineup of really cool Drupal Topics.

For the Showcase site – Jon Luini from Chime Interactive is going to show off the brand new Ben Harper website, which has some really cool features, like a custom built ajax framework and great integration with Facebook using Dave Cohens Drupal / Facebook module. Dave Cohen will present with Jon to show off the integration of Facebook in a live site. Ben Harpers Facebook page has 844,432 fans. This will be a great presentation of a high end web site integrated with Facebook along with many other super cutting edge technologies.

The tech Session will focus on a topic which many of you may have faced or wondered about which is How to make Drupal talk to a Flex application. This month Somnath Banerjee from Advanced Software Systems is going to give a general overview and techniques he uses to integrate Drupal data into Flex applications. This is a hot way of using Drupal as the database for content and Flex as the graphical front end to the site.

We will also discuss San Francisco Drupalcon and how you can sponsor the event and buy tickets.

Get ready for the next SemWeb Installfest!  This month’s Installfest will be divided into two parts:

Installation and Chatter (12 Noon – 2 pm)

We’ll attempt to walk folks through the installation of assorted Semantic Web tools, including: AllegroGraph, Eclipse, Java, Jena, Joseki, Pellet, Protege 4, and Semantic MediaWiki.

If you’ve been wanting to get one or more of these tools set up on your laptop, this would be a good time and place to give it a try. Attendees are also encouraged to meet and chatter with each other.

Presentations and Discussion (2 pm – 4 pm)

Andraz Tori (Zemanta) will present Zemanta’s (text to semantic data) API and demonstrate some applications (eg, Linked Galaxy), then lead a discussion on how Zemanta’s capabilities can be used.

Mike Hinchey (Franz) will present “Using Clojure with AllegroGraph”. Attendees who have installed AllegroGraph will be able to work through the Clojure examples.

Other presentations are possible (please consider volunteering!). Any remaining time will be used in group discussions (topics TBD…).
