Sidewalk Collective SoMa

Tuesday, September 7, 7:00pm
At Postling, we believe in empowering small businesses so local communities can thrive in a world of big brands. That’s why we started Sidewalk Collective—neighborhood events where independently-owned businesses bring their social media stories, questions, and successes to an open forum.

San Francisco businesses are invited to join us for an open discussion at pariSoma Innovation Loft. In addition to networking with other local business owners, you’ll walk away with tips and tricks for the latest social media tools, bright ideas for social media marketing, and solutions to problems you’re encountering.

Light snacks and drinks will be provided.

Coworker of the Week: Jiang Li

Jiang Li is a relatively recent addition to the Coworkers here at pariSoma and just began this summer. Jiang does development work for faberNovel/pariSoma as well as helps out with events.

He’s a recent U.C berkeley Graduate with a degree in EECS. He was born in Beijing, China but moved to America when he was young and has lived in the Bay Area ever since. He is currently interested in Mobile development for smart phones. In his spare time Jiang likes to work on the computer, surf the internet and cook O-o. His favorite reality T.V show is Top Chef, but he’s also told us that he likes House and The Office.

Word on the street is that he’s a pretty good cook, and we hope to get him to make something for us sometime! In the meanwhile, we’ll all content ourselves with having him around as a developer.

Jiang’s favorite quotation is: “All my life I’ve wanted to be someone; I guess I should have been more specific.” Deep thoughts, there.

Drumroll please…The App Faceoff winner is WTFAY!

Last night at pariSoma, we were pitched and wooed by app developers galore!  After getting the event started with some Coronas and sangria (roll those “r”‘s if you can) we settled down to hear a group of developers and companies pitch their most recent apps.

Demo apps included Bee.tv, BreezyPrint, DataTap, CameraSafe, Mayor Maker, WTFAY, Pixelpipe, Tilt, and Footfeed (read more about each here). Our great group of judges included Amit K. Gupta, founder, inMobi, Anthony Ha, Assitant Editor at VentureBeat, John Malloy from BlueRun Ventures, Tom Montgomery from IDG Ventures, Shobeir Shobeiri from MobClix, and Eddie Marks from Inedible Software.

The top app, as voted by judges, was WTFAY or WhereTheFAreYa with a total average score of 3.7 out of 5.  With WTFAY, you grab your phone, ping the other person, and in seconds, you are both looking at your two locations on a map.  Follow them on Twitter @WhereTheFAreYa and check out their website.

BreezyPrint, an awesome solution for making mobile printing a reality, finished 2nd with a total average score of 3.6.  The software is incredibly easy to use, takes about 2 minutes to set up, works with practically every printer ever made and lets you print anything from your mobile device in just a few clicks.  Follow them on Twitter @BreezyPrint and check out their website.

Tilt, a very fun social game that gives players the experience of making a difference in the world, finished 3rd with a total average score of 3.45.  It’s up to players to pick between paper and plastic and clean up the environment of Shady Glen.  Follow them on Twitter @TiltWorld and check out their website.

It was clear that location-based services (LBS) were a big theme of the night and is where a lot of developers are focusing their efforts.  The big question for most of them seems to be “How are you going to monetize?”.  Still in its infancy, LBS is clearly going to be a part of daily life moving forward.  So if you are a developer, try to think of the best way you can monetize  a great LBS app and you might be the next App Faceoff winner!

We’d like to congratulate all the presenters and thank our judges and attendees once again for a wonderful event.  Keep your eyes and ears open for the next App Faceoff soon!

Coworker of the week: Honey the Dog

This week’s coworker of the week doesn’t really do a lot of working at pariSoma. She doesn’t hold a job, or even get paid to do anything. She mostly spends her time sleeping in too-small places, snoring loudly, cuddling, and falling off of office chairs.

Honey the dog began coworking in April after some medical issues made her home office (sofa) untenable. Since then, she’s been one of the most regular members at pariSoma and enjoys entertaining at events and greeting people when they enter the space. She loves meeting new people, particularly when they have some food they might want to share with her (though she is trying to watch her figure, Honey just can’t help but eat anything that is given to her).

Honey has become fast friends with many people at pariSoma, most particularly VidNetwork CEO/Founder Kieran Farr, who she spends long hours with while at work and sometimes goes to his place for slumber parties when her normal human, Anne, is busy.

Even though Honey can be a bit distracting with her snoring and occasional barking at plants, she is said to increase productivity in the workplace. We think it’s safe to say that pariSoma is a better place with her around.

Check out our coworkers of the week to learn more about our members (humans, too)!

Entrepreneur Commons

Monday, August 23, 8:30am – 10:00am
Entrepreneur Commons is a network of entrepreneurs that provides peer-support. Entrepreneurs meet on a regular basis (roughly once a month) to share issues and successes on their current projects with other entrepreneurs. These meetings are an opportunity for all to exchange information, knowledge and contacts in a trusted environment.

San Francisco chapter member Brandon P. says:Through EC, I’ve met a solid, knowledgeable group of entrepreneurs who challenge my thinking and gladly offer assistance.

Members of Entrepreneur Commons also have access to the global network of entrepreneurs who have already joined local chapters in other places, or who have joined the online community through the Entrepreneur Commons Academy. Currently there are chapters in eight cities: San Francisco, Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Oakland CA, Miami, Chicago, New York and Paris France.

We’re hoping to get a core group of 8 people going, and would LOVE to see you there!

Coworker of the week: Ray Pawulich

Ray Pawulich came to pariSoma in December of last year in joining with the VidSF team as the Content Director. Since he joined, we’ve learned that Ray loves karaoke, country music, fast food, and astrology.

Ray’s past is as shrouded in mystery as his 2009 tax return. Some say he is the result of a sinister government experiment. Others suggest he is the earthly manifestation of the Peruvian diety Ramo. However most scholars believe he is a dude from Indiana.

The scholars at pariSoma have told us that Ray spent most of his life in Indiana, and graduated from Indiana University after a stint at UCLA. He then went into billboard creation, sales, and design but the corporate life didn’t suit him. When he had the opportunity to drop everything and join a boot-strapping startup in SF, he made his move out here.

Ray’s favorite quotation comes from Ben Franklin: “When something has been said and said well, have no scruple: take it and copy it.”

DataPortability Project Meetup

Thursday, August 12, 6pm
The DataPortability Project is a California not-for-profit that promotes an Internet where people have control over their personal data. We want web sites to make it easy to bring your profiles, contacts, and media to them, to share them with other sites, and to gracefully end your relationship with them. This meetup is for business and technologists to get help building better data portability practices, policies, and tools. We’ll discuss the legal and technology layers and anything else to move from wishful thinking to the standard way of doing things.

From the organizer:
The path to power starts in small rooms where ordinary citizens conspire to change the world.

I’ll bring the cupcakes.

On your agenda:

Getting to know each other,
brainstorming projects to improve data portability in our lives,
existing projects where you can help,
suggestions for better organizing The DataPortability Project,
the future of our meetup,
and everything else you think we should discuss.
I’ll also have a kit you can use to to write a Portability Policy. Slides, letters, plans, etc. We can walk through the kit and I’ll be sure to leave links to the material. By the end of the night you’ll be ready to suggest your organization should draft portability policy.

I’m a volunteer, one of twelve elected directors of the Project, and a contributor to the Portability Policy action group. I hope I can answer most questions you have about the DPP.
