FailChat#4: How to Survive Without Funding

Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 6:30 PM

Welcome to FailChats, based on the groundbreaking FailCon:
the first conference ever to focus on the ins and outs of business failure, and how to prepare.

Many companies today don’t get funded. Considering that, how does a small startup survive tough competition, company growth, and unpredictable markets with virtually zero capital? It definitely happens and to help everyone learn how, we’ve compiled a panel of founders who’ve been there and investors who have seen it happen. We’ll be discussing whether its possible to get by without funding, how to balance the budget if you try, and what problems you are likely to encounter. We’ll also be getting into what tools to use, how to stay lean, stories of what hasn’t worked, and other fundamentals of the self-funded process.

Each FailChat attracts an intimate and targeted group of early-stage founders and entrepreneurs to discuss the common mistakes and missteps that startups and small businesses take. Beer, wine, non-alcoholic beverages, and appetizers are provided throughout the seminar.

Panelists
- Lyn Williams; MySoiree
- Pat Diven; AddToAny
- Gregarious Narain; Lil’Grams
- Christine Herron, First Round Capital

Coworker of the week: Michael Cole

We’re starting a coworker of the week series! We’ll highlight one of our coworkers each week.

Michael joined us at the end of June this year and has been awesome ever since (and probably beforehand, too). Michael graduated from University of California Santa Barbara. During the last year of college, he got heavily into internet marketing and copy writing. Right after graduating, Michael joined one of the online marketing management/consulting company RevUpNet, which was co-founded by one of his professors. Since then, he’s just been enjoying work and traveling whenever he gets the opportunity.

Michael prides himself on his ability to focus on a task for up to 30 seconds at a time, as well vaguely speak Japanese, all the while confusing enemies with witty comebacks. He’s clearly not someone we’d want to mess with!

If Michael stumbled upon $1,000,000 he’d probably take some time off, travel the world, and do some angel investing. Then he’d come back to doing what he’s doing at his current job.
