Drumroll please…The App Faceoff winner is WTFAY!26 Aug
Last night at pariSoma, we were pitched and wooed by app developers galore! After getting the event started with some Coronas and sangria (roll those “r”‘s if you can) we settled down to hear a group of developers and companies pitch their most recent apps.
Demo apps included Bee.tv, BreezyPrint, DataTap, CameraSafe, Mayor Maker, WTFAY, Pixelpipe, Tilt, and Footfeed (read more about each here). Our great group of judges included Amit K. Gupta, founder, inMobi, Anthony Ha, Assitant Editor at VentureBeat, John Malloy from BlueRun Ventures, Tom Montgomery from IDG Ventures, Shobeir Shobeiri from MobClix, and Eddie Marks from Inedible Software.
The top app, as voted by judges, was WTFAY or WhereTheFAreYa with a total average score of 3.7 out of 5. With WTFAY, you grab your phone, ping the other person, and in seconds, you are both looking at your two locations on a map. Follow them on Twitter @WhereTheFAreYa and check out their website.
BreezyPrint, an awesome solution for making mobile printing a reality, finished 2nd with a total average score of 3.6. The software is incredibly easy to use, takes about 2 minutes to set up, works with practically every printer ever made and lets you print anything from your mobile device in just a few clicks. Follow them on Twitter @BreezyPrint and check out their website.
Tilt, a very fun social game that gives players the experience of making a difference in the world, finished 3rd with a total average score of 3.45. It’s up to players to pick between paper and plastic and clean up the environment of Shady Glen. Follow them on Twitter @TiltWorld and check out their website.
It was clear that location-based services (LBS) were a big theme of the night and is where a lot of developers are focusing their efforts. The big question for most of them seems to be “How are you going to monetize?”. Still in its infancy, LBS is clearly going to be a part of daily life moving forward. So if you are a developer, try to think of the best way you can monetize a great LBS app and you might be the next App Faceoff winner!
We’d like to congratulate all the presenters and thank our judges and attendees once again for a wonderful event. Keep your eyes and ears open for the next App Faceoff soon!
