6:30pm – 9:00pm

169 11th Street

Having previously hosted Pandora’s Tim Westergren and SomaFM’s Rusty Hodge, musi2k now welcomes SoundCloud’s Henrik Lenberg and ArtistData’s Brenden Mulligan for a talk on how their websites have become foundations in the new music economy” — an idea that first emerged in 2007, now being actualized and scaled thanks to services like SoundCloud and ArtistData.

Foundations of the New Music Economy

After the album sales apocalypse, in the post Napster era, music on the internet is more about the artists & their scene than the music business & its revenue streams– or lack thereof. For every physical record store that closes its doors, a thousand artists are making their music available online. For every established label bemoaning piracy and over-saturation, a hundred indie music blogs, DJs, and indie imprints have launched en masse. Where is this going?

There’s two ways to look at the situation: as a dire, depressing reminder of how scary the internet is for the entrenched — or as an expanding frontier for innovators. This dichotomy is nothing new,  but the proponents of the revolution have slowly and surely been building (and successfully using) the platforms that will condemn dissenters to irrelevancy– the innovators are winning, if you know where to look and what questions to ask.

The talk will be moderated by Jason Wohlstadter, owner/director of the Proton radio station & music label.
